# Elementary Mathematics Course Descriptions

## Alpha - Level A

### Students who are ready for Alpha:

• can accurately count up to 9

• can associate a number with a given quantity of objects

• can write the numerals 0 to 9

• can follow simple directions

• can engage in a lesson with an instructor for about 15 minutes

• can work to commit addition and subtraction facts to memory

• can persevere at a task until new skills are mastered

### Major Concepts and Skills Include:

• Understanding place value

• Extending the counting sequence

• Fluently adding all single-digit numbers

• Solving for an unknown addend

• Understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction

• Fluently subtracting all single-digit numbers

### Books needed:

Mathusee Alpha student workbook and mathusee blocks (one set of blocks per family).

## Beta - Level B

### Students who are ready for Beta:

• can count by tens

• can begin at any number and count to 100

• can write any number between 0 and 999

• can recall the addition and subtraction facts from memory

• can use place value to identify the digits that represent units, tens, and hundreds

• can write a mathematical expression (number sentence) to represent a word problem

• can solve for an unknown in a simple addition or subtraction equation

### Major Concepts and Skills Include:

• Understanding place value and using it to add or subtract

• Fluently adding any combination of whole numbers

• Solving for an unknown addend

• Fluently subtracting any combination of whole numbers

• Solving abstract and real-world problems involving addition and subtraction

## Gamma - Level C

### Students who are ready for Gamma:

• can read and write numbers through the hundred thousands

• can count by twos, fives, and tens

• can recall addition and subtraction facts from memory

• can add and subtract multiple-digit numbers, using regrouping (carrying or borrowing) as needed

### Major Concepts and Skills Include:

• Using strategies based on place value and properties of operations to multiply

• Fluently multiplying any combination of whole numbers

• Solving for an unknown factor

• Solving abstract and real-world problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication

• Measuring and computing area

• Relating concepts of area to addition and multiplication

## Delta - Level D

### Students who are ready for Delta:

• can comfortably add or subtract multiple-digit numbers, using regrouping as needed

• can recall single-digit multiplication facts from memory

• can demonstrate a multiplication problem by building or drawing a rectangle

• can list the multiplication facts of a given number

• can solve for an unknown factor

• can write a subtraction equation (number sentence) to solve a word problem

• can write a multiplication equation (number sentence) to solve a word problem

### Major Concepts and Skills Include:

• Using strategies based on place value and properties of operations to divide

• Understanding division as solving for an unknown factor

• Fluently dividing any combination of whole numbers

• Solving abstract and real-world problems involving all four operations

• Interpreting remainders in short and long division

• Understanding fraction notation in light of division

### Students who are ready for Epsilon:

• can comfortably add or subtract multiple-digit numbers, using regrouping as necessary

• can demonstrate a division problem by drawing a diagram

• can give the quotients for single-digit division facts from memory

• can comfortably multiply multiple-digit numbers, regrouping as necessary

• can comfortably divide multiple-digit numbers with remainders

• can determine and apply the operation(s) needed to solve a word problem

### Major Concepts and Skills Include:

• Recognizing and generating equivalent fractions

• Understanding addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and mixed numbers

• Fluently adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers

### Additional Concepts and Skills:

• Using multiple strategies to recognize common factors

• Understanding grouping symbols and their effect on order of operations

• Interpreting and solving word problems

• Comparing, and converting decimal fractions

• Finding the area and circumference of circles

• Representing fractions and fractional measurements on line plots and number lines

• Using coordinates to represent ordered relationships

## Zeta - Level F

### Students who are ready for Zeta:

• can competently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multiple-digit whole numbers

• can competently add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions

• can competently add, subtract, multiply, and divide mixed numbers

• can determine and apply the operation(s) necessary to solve a word problem with whole numbers or fractions

### Major Concepts and Skills Include:

• Expanding understanding of place value from positive powers of ten to include decimals

• Fluently adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing multiple digit decimals using place-value strategies

• Solving real-world problems with decimals and percentages

• Understanding the metric system and converting from one unit of measure to another

### Additional Concepts and Skills:

• Understanding and simplifying exponents

• Understanding negative numbers and representing them on the coordinate plane

• Using properties of operations to simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions

• Interpreting and graphing relationships between dependent and independent variables

• Understanding of plane geometry & geometric symbols

• Using ratio reasoning to solve problems
